Part of the KOPEX Group, PT. KOPEX Mining Contractors (KMC), was established as an Indonesian registered company in 2008.

KMC has the capability to design, plan, construct, develop and operate underground coal mines as well as offering professional geological consultancy services to the coal mining industry in the Asia Pacific region.

KMC is currently constructing an underground coal mine near the town of Bontang in East Kalimantan. KMC is operating as the mining contractor for PT. Indominco Mandiri with the overall objective of developing techniques and systems appropriate for the local mining conditions and ultimately building on this initial experience to move to an expansive underground operation. The mining techniques being utilised have never been adopted in Indonesia before.

This groundbreaking project was commenced in April 2008. The total value of the contract is in excess of US$12 million and the initial scope of work included construction of two access portals, development of two inseam tunnels ('roadways') more than 2km in length and the development of a trial pillar extraction system. Currently, the pillar extraction system is well established and is producing very positive results indicating that such a system can be successfully applied for the first time in Indonesia.

The next planned phase of the project will build on the experience to date and expand production capability from the underground mine to target production of more than 1.5 million tonnes per annum, utilising pillar extraction techniques and the implementation of a trial longwall system.

Additionally, KMC is currently providing professional geological services to another Indonesian company (PT. Bayan Resources) and has prepared geological reports and conducted feasibility studies for other coal mine projects owned by the same Group as well as other companies.
